Summer Dental Tips for Kids
By Ann R. Sielicki, DDS on May 26, 2018
Summer means school is out, and with so many social activities (e.g., summer camp, vacations, beach days) that are soon about to flood your schedule, it can be difficult to remember to prioritize your little one’s oral health. But don’t worry, Scottsdale dental practice Sonoran Dental Design is here to help. Here, we share our best tips for keeping your and your child’s oral health in tip top shape during summer.
Stick to a normal dental routine. Considering summer is filled with sleepovers, vacations and late-night bedtimes, it can be easy for kids to slack off on oral health hygiene. As a parent, it is important to reinforce good oral health habits year round. Remember the 3-2-1 rule: eat three healthy meals, brush twice and floss once a day.
Buy new toothbrushes. Toothbrushes should be thrown out after three months, or sooner if the bristles have worn out. If you don’t remember when the last time you got your child a new toothbrush, then it’s time for a new one!
Snack on healthy treats. Summer is known for delicious treats and sweets like ice cream and candy, but these are notoriously bad for teeth. This summer, stock up on healthy snacks like cheese sticks, veggies, fresh fruit and trail mix (with nuts).
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Water is essential for good oral health as it helps wash away bacteria and food debris from the mouth. Limit your and your child’s soda and sports drink intake and substitute them with water as often as possible.
Purchase a mouth guard. Protect your child’s smile from sports-related fractures, cracks and other mouth injuries with a mouth guard. Mouth guards can be purchased over the counter or they can be custom-made by a dentist.
Keep your dentist’s contact information handy. Dental emergencies can occur at any moment so it’s a good idea to keep your dentist’s phone number available at all times.
Schedule a routine checkup. Take advantage of this time of the year when your child won’t have to miss school to schedule a much needed dental checkup. Like adults, children should visit the dentist for a routine checkup and cleaning every six months.
