Tips for Choosing a Dentist

By Ann R. Sielicki, DDS on August 19, 2019

Practicing good at-home oral hygiene is only one part of keeping your oral health in check. Seeing a dentist regularly is vital to enjoying a healthy smile for life. If you don’t have a dentist, or if you are looking for a new one, it can be hard to know where to find someone who is experienced, knowledgeable and compassionate.

Dr. Ann Sielicki, from Sonoran Dental Design who serves Scottsdale and the surrounding areas, has a few tips for choosing the right dentist.

Ask Trusted Friends and Family for Recommendations

One of the best ways to start looking for a dentist is by asking your friends and family for recommendations. Chances are, at least some of them have a great dentist they love! If you don’t have any friends or family in your area, you can ask your primary care physician or other members of the medical community (e.g., a trusted pharmacist) for recommendations.

Do Your Research

Once you have a list of recommendations, do a little bit of research on each dentist and their practice. Call the office and speak to a staff member or visit the dentist’s website to learn more about each provider and the scope of his or her practice. Familiarize yourself with their office location and hours, and ask yourself whether they are accessible to you in terms of location and availability. Is the office close to your home or work? Does the practice offer evening or weekend appointments?

Meet a Few Dentists for Consultations

After doing some research, you will narrow down your list of names even further. Once you have a short list, make appointments to meet each dentist. Spend some time getting to know them and their staff and find out which procedures they offer or areas they specialize in. Get a feel for the office environment and atmosphere.

Ask Yourself How You Feel about Each Dentist

After meeting each provider, ask yourself whether he or she feels like a good fit. Do they listen and ask you questions, or spend most of the time talking? Are they patient or do they rush you through the meeting? Is the office clean and comfortable?

How you answer those questions should give you a strong indication of which dentist is right for you.
