What to Expect during Invisalign® Treatment By Ann R. Sielicki, DDS on November 27, 2017

Invisalign® alignersOrthodontic issues can affect patients as early as their pre-teens and into adulthood. Traditionally, metal braces have been the only option for effectively straightening the teeth and correcting the bite. For all of their benefits, braces have the obvious downfall of being bulky, uncomfortable, and unpleasing to the eye.

Fortunately, patients today have another option to consider. Invisalign® uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to gradually shift the teeth and improve the bite. Invisalign® is just as effective as braces in correcting most malocclusion problems, making it a viable option for nearly all of Dr. Ann Sielicki’s dental patients. Here, we go over the typical Invisalign® treatment timeline for patients at our Scottsdale, AZ dental practice.

Consultation

Results and patient satisfaction are two of Dr. Sielicki’s biggest priorities, so she will never recommend a treatment that is not likely to be successful for patients. Prior to beginning orthodontic treatment, it is vital that patients undergo a thorough consultation with Dr. Sielicki. At this consultation, Dr. Sielicki will examine the teeth and mouth to determine the specific orthodontic needs of the patient. This examination will include a visual evaluation of the teeth, as well as X-rays and digital images. If the patient is found to be an ideal candidate for Invisalign®, then these images, along with impressions of the teeth, will be used to customize the patient’s Invisalign® treatment plan.

Starting Treatment

Invisalign® treatment will begin when the patient’s custom aligners arrive at our office. We will schedule an appointment with patients so we can show them how to use the aligners and go over the expectations for treatment. Once treatment begins, Invisalign® aligners should be worn at least 20 to 22 hours each day to ensure effectiveness.

Progressing Through Treatment

Invisalign® treatment works by placing pressure on the teeth to gradually encourage them to move into their proper position. To keep pressure consistent, it is necessary for the patient to switch to a new set of aligners roughly every two weeks. It is not necessary to schedule a dental check-up every time the aligners are switched, but exams will be scheduled periodically so that we can ensure treatment is progressing as expected.

Invisalign® treatment offers patients a number of conveniences that set this technique apart from traditional braces. During Invisalign® treatment, aligners can be removed while patients eat, so they are free to enjoy all the foods they love. Aligners should also be taken out when brushing or flossing, to make oral care easy and convenient.

How Long Does Treatment Last?

Invisalign® treatment will be customized to the unique needs of each patient, so the length of treatment will vary. However, the average treatment timeline is between 12 and 18 months, which is comparable to the average braces treatment. Once desired results have been achieved, Invisalign® aligners no longer need to be worn. However, we do typically provide patients with a retainer that should be worn to maintain Invisalign® results.
