What Is Restorative Dentistry and How Does It Help?
Restorative dentistry is an umbrella term for dental care that's focused on improving the health and function of your teeth, gums, jaw, and other oral structures. Common treatments include crowns, dental implants, and gum disease treatment. Though improving your health and dental function are the primary goals, restorative dental care goes a long way in creating a beautiful smile. Drs. Ann Sielicki and Rewan Zineldine offer a wide range of restorative procedures and look forward to creating a treatment plan right for you in Scottsdale.
Dental Implants
If you have lost one or more teeth, your dentist can help you reclaim the look and function of your smile with dental implants. These titanium implants can be inserted into your jawbone, where they fuse with your natural tissue and create a stable foundation for all types of prostheses, including crowns, bridges, and dentures.
If you’d like to restore your smile with implants, your dentist will facilitate your implant placement surgery by working closely with our trusted local oral surgeon. Once healing is complete, we will custom-make a beautiful restoration and attach it to your implant or implants. Depending on your particular circumstances, we may be able to load a restoration immediately, instantly repairing your smile.
Dental Crowns
A dental crown, also called a cap, is a restoration that covers the entire tooth, from the chewing surface to the gums. Our dentists often places dental crowns over teeth damaged by large cavities, infection, or trauma. These restorations protect the remaining structure and improve the appearance of a tooth for a healthy, attractive smile.
At our Scottsdale dentistry practice, we frequently use our advanced CEREC® computer-assisted design and milling machine to create and place customized caps in a single appointment. We most often use crowns made of durable, aesthetic materials like IPS e.max® and zirconia Lava™ to restore patients' smiles. In some cases, we also use leucite-enforced ceramic IPS Empress® or gold restorations. Our team will help you determine which type of crown will suit your needs, preferences, and budget.
Dental Bridges
If you are missing a single tooth or multiple adjacent teeth, your dentist may recommend placing a dental bridge to fill the gap in your smile. These larger prostheses consist of two crowns with an artificial tooth or teeth between them.
If you opt for a conventional bridge, we will modify two healthy teeth to hold the crowns for your bridge. However, we typically recommend implant-supported bridges, which anchor to dental implants. These prostheses are more stable, natural-looking, and healthy because the implants stimulate the jawbone to prevent deterioration.
Our team usually uses porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) bridges for the back of the mouth; more lifelike all-porcelain or zirconia restorations are ideal for the front teeth due to their more appealing cosmetic appearance.
Dental Fillings
Bacteria in plaque and tartar produce acids that can wear down enamel, creating cavities (also known as "caries"). Our practice uses the advanced CariFree® system to analyze your mouth’s pH and bacterial content, which allows us to detect decay before it becomes more advanced or difficult to treat.
If you suffer from cavities, we will simply remove the damaged portion of enamel, clean the remaining tooth, and place a filling to restore it. We use only tooth-colored composite fillings to achieve both durable and natural-looking results. As one of the most common dentistry procedures, we make the placement of dental fillings as quick and comfortable as possible.
Inlays and Onlays
If you suffer from an area of decay or damage that is too large for a simple filling, but not extensive enough to require a dental cap, we may recommend an inlay or onlay to repair your tooth. Inlays cover just the chewing surface, while onlays extend beyond the cusps, or raised corners, of the tooth.
If you require an inlay or onlay, our dentist will custom-make these restorations using our advanced CEREC machine so that they blend beautifully with your smile. Our dentists use dental porcelain to fabricate inlays and onlays because this restorative option is attractive, sturdy, and stain resistant.
Dentures
Unfortunately, millions of Americans have lost most or all of their teeth to decay, periodontal disease, injury, or other issues. At our Scottsdale dentistry practice, our dentists can provide dentures to help you eat, speak, and smile comfortably and confidently again.
We don't offer conventional prostheses (artificial teeth that rest atop your gum tissue attached by suction and adhesive) since these restorations can shift and lead to bone loss. We recommend implant-supported dentures instead. These prostheses provide unparalleled stability using four or more strategically placed implants per arch.
Full Mouth Reconstruction
At Sonoran Dental Design in Scottsdale, we can develop full mouth reconstruction treatment plans for patients who suffer from numerous dental issues. These customized plans combine multiple restorative dental procedures to deliver outstanding outcomes.
Most often, patients who require full mouth reconstruction suffer from gum disease, so we will recommend appropriate periodontal treatments.
Once your gums are healthy, our dentists will rehabilitate the rest of your smile using implants, grafting, cosmetic dentistry, or other procedures, depending on your specific needs.
