Dental Implants

Losing a tooth can undermine not only the appearance of your smile but its health and function, as well. At Sonoran Dental Design in Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. Ann Sielicki and her team can restore dental implants to replace your missing teeth.  Find out why dental implants and custom restorations are the next best thing to your natural teeth.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Implants are surgically embedded in the jawbone in the place of missing tooth roots. After they fuse with the jaw over the course of three to six months, they are ready to provide unparalleled support for crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Anatomy of a Dental Implant

Illustration demonstrating anatomy of dental implant and restoration
Dental implants are made of three parts: the implant, the restoration, and the abutment. The implant serves as artificial tooth roots. The restoration replaces the portion of the tooth that's visible above the gumline. The abutment securely connects the implant to the restoration.

Am I a Good Candidate for Treatment?

While modern techniques like All-on-4 make dental implants accessible for a wider range of patients, not everyone qualifies for treatment. Several factors can affect your candidacy, such as:

Oral Health

It is important to be in good oral health other than tooth loss before undergoing dental implant treatment. During your consultation at our Scottsdale office, we will examine your mouth and check for signs of gum disease, infection, and other common conditions. If we find anything, we will provide the appropriate treatment to restore your candidacy for implants.

Overall Health

Since dental implants involve a surgical procedure, they are not recommended for individuals who suffer from certain health conditions. Uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and osteoporosis can all increase your chances of implant failure. Please go over your medical history with your dentist so we can assess your risks and best ensure your safety.

Jawbone Density

Tooth roots serve an important function in maintaining strong gum and jawbone tissue. When you are missing teeth for a long period, your jaw begins to atrophy. While traditional dental implants do not work for patients with low bone density, you may still qualify for All-on-4 treatment.

I arrived early and was taken right in. Dental assistant was great and prepared me for the dentist. Dentist was very good and I would come here again! I am a snowbird from Canada but I would pick these folks as my regular dental care group. They are that good.

Basic dental insurance does not cover the cost of the implant itself or the abutment that connects the implant to your replacement teeth. However, most insurance plans do contribute to the cost of crowns, bridges, dentures, and preparatory procedures such as gum disease treatment, tooth extraction, and fillings

Our practice accepts most insurance plans, and you can count on our staff to work directly with your provider to secure maximum coverage of all treatments relating to your implants. For any remaining out-of-pocket expenses, we accept CareCredit® financing. Based on your credit score, this popular medical lender can allow you to make interest-free or low-interest monthly payments that make dental implants a comfortable fit for most budgets. If you want to use an existing line of credit, we accept American Express, Visa, and MasterCard. We also accept cash and checks.

If you have any questions about how we can help make implants an affordable solution for you, please send us a message or call us today:

Preparatory Procedures

Some patients may need preparatory procedures prior to dental implant placement. This commonly includes tooth removal or the placement of bone grafts to increase jawbone density. If included, this step can add a few months to the total treatment time.

Implant Placement

On the day of the surgery, you will receive a local anesthetic and a form of sedation for additional comfort, if desired. Then, your licensed oral surgeon will create a small incision in the gum tissue to access the jawbone. When the area has been prepared, a special instrument is used to carefully insert the threaded titanium implant into the jaw.

Sutures

Next, we place a small healing cap on the implant and close the incision with sutures. This completes the first phase of your procedure. We will provide you with detailed recovery instructions to reduce your risk for postoperative complications.

Healing

During this recovery period, the bone tissue fuses to the titanium surface of the implant in a process known as osseointegration. This usually takes about three to six months.

Abutment Placement

When you are fully healed, you will undergo a second procedure to attach small connector parts known as abutments to each implant. The abutment extends just beyond the gums and serves as an anchor for your new restoration.

Final Restoration

Once the abutments are in place, you will be scheduled for the final phase of treatment at our Scottsdale office. Your dentist will secure your permanent crown, bridge, or denture to the abutments to complete your smile. After this step, your restoration can be used and cleaned just like real teeth.

The office presents an air of detail and professionalism. The staff is very welcoming and knows who you are. The technician was concerned with my comfort and was detailed with her assessment and evaluation. As a person that avoided the dentist until necessary the hesitation is gone.
