Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue that can slowly progress into a serious problem that impacts your overall health.

Visiting a dentist regularly can help detect gum disease at an early stage, so any necessary treatment can be conservative and non-invasive.

Dr. Ann Sielicki of Sonoran Dental Design in Scottsdale, AZ, can provide you with preventative care and effective periodontal treatment.

I arrived early and was taken right in. Dental assistant was great and prepared me for the dentist. Dentist was very good and I would come here again! I am a snowbird from Canada but I would pick these folks as my regular dental care group. They are that good.

Causes of Gum Disease

The most common cause of gum disease we see is poor oral hygiene. Without proper oral hygiene, plaque builds up, allowing bacteria to set in under the gum line and cause irritation and inflammation. This leads to gum disease. Other contributing gum disease factors include:

  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Genetics
  • Crooked teeth that are hard to clean
  • Hormonal pregnancy changes
  • Diabetes
  • Certain medications

The Importance of Early Detection

Periodontitis is often a silent disease that many Scottsdale, AZ, dental patients are unaware of until it causes serious problems. Gum disease starts as gingivitis, a mild form of the disease. Without treatment, gingivitis progresses to a more serious form of gum disease that can cause widespread damage that is expensive to treat.

The Warning Signs of

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is often easy to ignore because it doesn't typically exhibit painful symptoms. It's easier to treat than advanced gum disease and is reversible in many cases. Symptoms of gingivitis often include:

  • Red gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Receding gums
  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Bad breath

The Warning Signs of

Advanced Periodontitis

When gingivitis progresses, it can become a more advanced form of periodontitis, which can have severe and far-reaching effects on your oral health and the health of your body. Symptoms of advanced periodontitis include:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Jawbone deterioration
  • Changes in your bite
  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth loss
Schedule regular checkups with our Scottsdale, AZ, dentist so she can screen you for the early warning signs of gingivitis and prevent it from becoming a serious concern.

Preventing and Treating Periodontal Disease

Periodontal care focuses on the gum tissues and bone that surround your teeth. When your gums are properly cared for, gum disease can be prevented easily. With unsuitable brushing and flossing habits, treatment may be needed.

Attend Dental Exams

During your regular dental appointments, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned by one of our skilled hygienists. Attending routine dental exams with our Scottsdale, AZ, dentist every six months allows her to determine whether the symptoms of gum disease are present. If they are, your dentist will create a suitable treatment plan.

Screening Technology

During your dental exam, Dr. Sielicki will examine your teeth and mouth for signs of cavities and gum disease using advanced technology. Our office uses the CariFree® system to assess pH levels to make sure everything is properly balanced. We also use OralDNA® labs to test samples of your saliva to check for bacteria and determine your risk factors for gum disease.

Follow an At-Home Care Routine

Our dentist and team can instruct you on proper at-home dental care to ensure you are doing everything you can to prevent periodontal disease. A simple at-home care routine including brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and using an oral rinse can go a long way towards preventing serious damage.

Scaling and Root Planing

If you have gingivitis, our team may perform scaling and root planing. This removes plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums, removes bacteria from the gum pockets around your teeth, and allows the healthy gum tissue to reattach to the teeth. We will also polish your teeth and roots to prevent bacteria from accumulating in the future.

Laser treatment

Laser Treatment

If the disease has progressed to a more advanced form of periodontitis, you may require more extensive treatment with soft tissue lasers. We can use a combination of lasers to gently remove damaged tissue, and antibiotics to reduce inflammation and eliminate bacteria.

Preventative Checkups

After periodontitis has occurred, Dr. Sielicki may recommend more frequent dental visits to maintain your periodontal health and prevent periodontitis from recurring in the future. There, she can also strategize with you about better brushing habits and flossing techniques to improve your unique smile, so you get the most out of at-home care.
