Tooth Extraction
Dentists will always try to save a damaged tooth. However, it is not always possible.
A tooth extraction is sometimes the best choice to relieve pain and preserve your oral health.
Learn how Dr. Ann Sielicki in Scottsdale, AZ, combines experience with advanced technology to perform gentler tooth extractions.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
Dentists prioritize preserving teeth and will only perform tooth extraction as a last resort. Dr. Sielicki may suggest a tooth extraction if you have:

- A severely damaged tooth
- Extensive infection in a tooth's root canal
- Plans for dentures or dental implants
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Overcrowding that orthodontics can't resolve

Recovery Tips
Take Prescribed Medications
Pain is usually easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Dr. Sielicki may prescribe a medication or antibiotic as well. Take these as directed.
Use Ice
Ice packs are a great way to reduce swelling and ease pain. Place them over your cheeks for 30 minutes at a time.
Do Not Use a Straw
Any sucking motion can cause the blood clot to dislodge from the extraction site. This can put you at risk of developing a painful dry socket. Avoid using straws until you are healed.
