CEREC in Scottsdale, AZ
One of the greatest conveniences you will find at Sonoran Dental Design is the ability to receive a permanent dental crown in one easy visit. Traditionally, when you needed a dental crown, you had to bite down on gooey impression material, and then wear a temporary crown for weeks while your permanent crown was fabricated. Those days are over with the advanced CEREC® technology we offer at our dental practice in Scottsdale, AZ.
What is CEREC actually?
CEREC®, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, is a computerized system that uses 3-D photography and an onsite milling unit to create high quality full or partial dental crowns while you wait. What Is the Difference between CEREC & Traditional Crowns?
Traditional crowns are strong and provide structural support to damaged or decayed teeth. But the process to place traditional crowns is lengthy and inconvenient, as it requires multiple dental appointments. In between visits, you must wear a temporary crown, which may be ill-fitting or prone to shifting out place. Also, some types of traditional porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can leave a gray or black line along the gumline, which is an eyesore.
CEREC crowns are just as strong and durable as traditional crowns, but because they are designed and placed in a single visit, they save you valuable time and frustration. With CEREC crowns, there is no need to wear an uncomfortable temporary crown. You do not have to worry about your crown shifting out of place and disrupting your ability to chew or speak.
Appearance-wise, CEREC crowns are made exclusively from porcelain, so they will not show a gray line or shadow along your gums like other types of crowns can. CEREC crowns are crafted from the highest quality materials to blend in with your surrounding teeth.
Who Is a Candidate for CEREC Crowns?
If you have been told by a dentist you need a crown, it is likely you can benefit from CEREC same-day crowns. The best way to confirm whether you are a suitable candidate for CEREC crowns is to schedule an in-person evaluation with Dr. Sielicki.
The Same-day Crown Procedure
The procedure for placing a same-day crown using CEREC® technology is quick and easy. First, an oral exam will be performed by Dr. Ann Sielicki to determine your treatment plan. Once the treatment plan is finalized and the extent of work is determined, we will numb the treatment area and clean the tooth, removing all decay and debris.
Next, using the CEREC® machine, CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer aided manufacturing) technology will take digital impressions of your tooth. This method is clean and precise, especially when compared to the sticky dental putty and trays traditionally used. We create a virtual restoration with these images, that can be refined through the CEREC® software.
The final designs are digitally sent to our onsite milling unit, which fabricates the restoration while you wait. The restoration is created from a block of tooth-colored porcelain, which is 100% metal-free, and will have a translucent appearance, closely matching your other teeth.
After your restoration is finished and inspected, we will place it on your tooth and make sure that it fits. Once it is determined that it fits properly, your crown will be permanently bonded to the tooth. The entire process is typically completed within a matter of hours, all in the convenience of one office and only one visit.

How to Care for Your CEREC Crown
If you want to ensure your CEREC crown lasts a long time, practice good at-home oral hygiene. It is essential that you brush and floss your crown just like you do your natural teeth every day. Also, Dr. Sielicki recommends you take certain precautions to protect your crown from excessive force. For example, avoid using your crowned tooth to bite into shells or bones, chew pencil tops or open bottles or packages. If you have a problem with grinding or clenching your teeth, get fitted for a custom mouth guard to protect the integrity of your crown. Plan to have your crown checked by your dentist at least every six months.
Frequently Asked Questions About CEREC Crowns
How long do CEREC crowns and restorations last?
CEREC crowns and restorations can last anywhere from five to 10 years. If a crown is well cared-for, it may last even longer. By taking precautions like protecting your crown from chronic teeth grinding or clenching, you increase the likelihood that your crown will last a long time.
What is the best material for a dental crown?
Modern dentistry offers more choices in restorative materials than ever. There is no “one-size-fits-all” material that suits every patient’s individual needs. The best material for your dental crown depends on factors such as where the tooth to be crowned is located in your mouth. Dr. Sielicki will evaluate the pros and cons of each material with you and help you find the one that is most appropriate for your needs and goals.
Will my CEREC crown look natural?
Yes, your CEREC crown will look natural and blend in with your surrounding teeth. The crown will be constructed of dental-quality ceramic and color-matched to the rest of your natural teeth.
