Sometimes patients come to the office and they've had dental work done over the years, and over time they've had some bone loss and with bone loss, gums recede, and sometimes those root surfaces that are exposed get very soft and patients might get recurrent decay, or maybe their bite has never been addressed. So during the new patient exam, when I am taking digital photos and explaining how their occlusion is, and they see some of the conditions of how the old dental work is breaking down, and it's to the point where you can't be doing any kind of patching, many times we have to redo a lot of old dental work. So full mouth construction would be talking to the patient about balancing their bite, either restoratively with crowns and veneers, or maybe doing some orthodontics first with wires and brackets, possibly Invisalign, and then doing any type of restorations that we need to balance their bite and make harmony and have form follow function and make everything feel amazing and easy to clean. Patients would obviously become aware of the condition of their mouth and decide that they want to do something about it. If they're doing full mouth construction, then that's definitely going to preserve and maintain their teeth for the rest of their life. So when we're doing full mouth construction, we want to make sure the occlusion is balanced. We use an example of building a custom home. You buy a lot. You want to level your lot before you build the home. A lot of it is education to explain different options for patients, and sometimes patients are learning this for the first time. So it takes consultations to explain and teach patients and show them with PowerPoint presentations how this is going to help their bite and their overall health and not have to be redoing dentistry and easier to keep their teeth clean and just be healthy and be on maintenance.
