What Causes Dental Stains?
Even with regular brushing, flossing, and six-month checkups, healthy teeth can become discolored. Foods and beverages such as coffee, mustard, red wine, and berries are among the most common causes of extrinsic stains. These stains are those that appear on the surface of teeth and can typically be removed or lightened with brushing, flossing and over-the-counter whitening treatments.
Medication, genetics, the natural aging process, and other factors can also take a toll on your teeth in the form of intrinsic stains, or those affecting the deepest layers of the teeth. Intrinsic stains can be virtually impossible to reverse with regular brushing, flossing and over-the-counter whitening treatments.
Intrinsic stains can be concealed with veneers and crowns. KöR is unique in that it can actually remove some intrinsic stains, making it a more conservative and economical cosmetic option than veneers and crowns. During an in-depth consultation, Dr. Sielicki can determine if KöR whitening is right for you.
Teeth Whitening vs. Bleaching
According to the American Dental Association, the term “whitening” can be used to describe any dental treatment or product that restores the natural color of teeth, including toothpastes and over-the-counter whitening strips. Whitening products such as these only remove surface stains. The FDA uses the term “bleaching” to refer to products that can change the natural color of teeth. These products contain a bleaching agent, such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which can remove both intrinsic and extrinsic stains. Many dental practices use the terms whitening and bleaching interchangeably, so it is best to find out the details of treatment in order to know what results to expect.
How Does it Work?
KöR whitening is an advanced two-step process. During the first phase of treatment, patients apply an advanced bleaching agent to their teeth daily for two weeks. Dr. Sielicki will provide custom dental trays designed to achieve a precise fit with your teeth and evenly administer the whitening gel. Unlike other dental whitening treatments, KöR involves using a bleaching agent that is continually refrigerated to preserve its potency, ensuring consistently attractive results.
Once patients complete the at-home stage of treatment, Dr. Sielicki performs an in-office whitening treatment that lasts about 90 minutes. One of the biggest advantages about the KöR teeth whitening system is that the in-office portion is professionally supervised. Dr. Sielicki is able to control the amount and strength of the whitening product used to ensure the patient is comfortable and achieves the most desirable results. Patients can relax during treatment, knowing that their smile is in the hands of a professional.
Afterward, patients can expect a smile that is eight shades brighter. Patients should continue to whiten at home with any remaining gel they may have left over from the at-home phase of treatment. It is typically recommended that patients continue to apply the whitening gel once per month to maintain their treatment results, but Dr. Sielicki may recommend more frequent, ongoing whitening, depending on a patient’s intake of stain-causing beverages, like coffee, as well as other factors.
Who Is a Good Candidate for KöR Whitening?
Ideal candidates for KöR teeth whitening are individuals with stains and discoloration due to any of the following:
- Regularly drinking coffee, red wine, tea or other dark-colored beverages
- Tobacco use
- The natural aging process
- Certain medications (e.g., tetracycline)
- Trauma to the mouth
Cosmetic teeth whitening is most effective on natural tooth enamel. Dental fillings, veneers, crowns and other dental restorations will not change color with teeth whitening. If you have dental restorations, Dr. Sielecki may recommend other treatment options. Keep in mind that dental problems such as cavities and decay will need to be treated before teeth whitening.
Does Treatment Hurt?
Many teeth whitening systems are known to cause tooth sensitivity before and after treatment. KöR is different in that it uses a desensitizer to combat tooth sensitivity before it even arises. The KöR desensitizer plugs the openings of the dental channels underneath tooth enamel (also known as dentinal tubules). This process prevents sensitivity and discomfort instead of simply attempting to treat symptoms after they have already occurred. As a result, patients are able to whiten their teeth comfortably and virtually pain-free.
How Long Do Results Last?
With proper care, results with KöR can last for many years. Dr. Sielicki recommends you avoid foods and beverages that are known to stain teeth. Brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups are also required to keep your pearly whites in beautiful and healthy condition. You can also schedule additional whitening treatments to touch up your lighter smile.
